Credner has shown.1 The canon of the church in the Clementine homilies 2 the ecclesiastical canon,3 and the canon of the truth, in Clement and Irenausyi the canon of the faith in Polycrates,5 the regnla ficlei of Ter tullian,6 and the libri regalares of Origen,7 imply a normative principle. But we cannot assent to Credner's view of the Greek word for canon being an abbreviation of Scriptures of canon,8 equivalent to Scrifitnrw legis in Diocletian's Actg - a View too artificial, and unsanctioned by usage.
